Immunization

Did you know…?

Vaccines save lives. A public health success story

Vaccines are safe and effective, while vaccine the diseases can cause permanent disability or even death

It’s a small world. Travel can spread comparatively rare diseases very quickly

Some diseases, like tetanus, are spread through the environment. Immunization is the most effective method of prevention

Immunization carried out according to the recommended schedules will provide good protection against the diseases

For diseases, there are no effective treatments, making vaccination even more important and essential.

Child Health Clinics in Prince George

What is a Child Health Clinic?

The main focus of a Child Health Clinic is to promote the health of infants and children under 5 years in our community. The Clinics are conducted at two locations in Prince George and are run by staff of the Northern Health Authority. The Children and Families Public Health Nurses are available to answer any questions you have about your child's development and to provide immunizations to your child. In Prince George, Public Health Nurses are able to offer 28 Child Health Clinics (CHCs) per month:

  • 16 at the Northern Interior Health Unit (NIHU)
  • 12 at the South Fort George Family Resource Centre (FRC) located in the former South Fort George Elementary building

Each clinic runs for a half-day and there is a mixture of morning, afternoon, and evening appointments. Combined, these clinics provide over 500 appointments per month.

In addition, the FRC offers a unique drop-in service from 9am to 11:30am Monday through Friday for clients to access a full range of public health services, including immunization.

A child should receive immunizations at specific ages. View the Immunization Schedule and determine when your child should attend a clinic.

The goal of the clinic is to ensure that up to 95% of children in the Prince George area
are immunized and that their growth and development is monitored using nationally
standardized growth charts and the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ). The ASQ is
a questionnaire that is easy for parents to complete. Parents at the Child Health Clinic
complete the questionnaire when your child is 6 & 18 months of age. The ASQ gives
parents and the public health nurse information on a child's communication, social/
personal, problem solving and motor development. At the Child Health Clinic topics such
as speech and language development, nutrition/feeding, safety, dental health, vision,
and post-partum depression are covered through the regular use of display boards,
pamphlets, and individual counselling. If any challenges are identified, parents are referred
to appropriate resources.
